– President Fidel V. Ramos
July 1992

President Fidel V. Ramos hails from Lingayen, Pangasinan. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point where he graduated in 1950. He was a member of the Philippines’ 20th Battalion Combat Team of the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea (PEFTOK) that fought in the Korean War. Ramos was an Infantry Reconnaissance Platoon Leader and was also in the Vietnam War as a non-combat civil military engineer and Chief of Staff of the Philippine Civic Action Group (PHILCAG).

As the Commander-in-Chief of the Philippines, he initiated negotiations with military rebels, communist insurgents, and Muslim separatists and convinced the underground to surface and explore with the government, more permanent and lasting roads to peace. The black four post bedframe is a masculine representation of the West Point graduate. Crisp white linens with subtle Filipino-inspired patterns complete the bedding ensemble, offering comfort with a salute to his disciplined military background.

This space is designed to reflect the qualities of resilience, strength and optimism that defined Ramos’ centennial presidency. The room is adorned with subtle pieces that depict key moments in Ramos’ political career. Known as “Steady Eddie” for his unflappable demeanor during the country’s regular moments of upheaval, he was frequently pictured chewing unlit cigars as he guided the Philippines with a sure hand.

Close friends and family members of President Ramos said that during the inauguration ceremony of his successor, President Joseph Estrada, he was already wearing his swimming trunks underneath his suit pants with a cigar ready in his pocket. Upon his arrival at his private residence, he lit his cigar and jumped in the swimming pool with his clothes on.

After his Presidency, he founded the Ramos Foundation for Peace and Development (RPDEV). The foundation is a non-partisan, non-profit, non-stock organization dedicated to promoting peace and development in the Philippines and the larger Asia-Pacific region.
