July 2016

Before his rise to the highest seat in the land, President Rodrigo R. Duterte was best known as the Mayor who restored and maintained ‘law and order’ in Davao City. His iron first ruled for nearly 22 years, earning him the nickname, “The Punisher.” His controversial ways paid dividends in results, as Davao was recognized as the city in Region XI with the “Best Peace and Order” by the National Peace and Order Council of the National Police Commission
in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. He signed ordinances that banned firecrackers, liquor and smoking in his city, a feat that he implemented on the nation when he assumed the presidency.

Contrary to his rough and tough persona, he is an advocate of the LGBT community rights.

His modest lifestyle was no campaign plot, but an authentic depiction of the man who still loves to sleep with a “kulambo” (mosquito net). With the information gathered on the former president, the design of this room is an extension of his “no frills” and “function over form” philosophy. Hence, the room is simple with hints of modern touches. The use of Filipino materials and finishes is abundant with abaca wallpaper. The use of leather strengthens the masculine theme. Alongside these are brill trims with brass nail heads to accentuate the wallpaper. The space is a representation of his strength and decisiveness. The neutral color palette with splashes of deep brown and burgundy highlights the masculinity of the former president, while touches of animal print in exotic tones give a touch of ruggedness and humility.
